Beating The Odds

One afternooon the staff at Best Friends received a call telling them that a couple had dropped of some newborn kittens in a parking lot. They needed round the clock feeding and care if they were to survive. One of the shelters workers went to get the tiny creatures.

Two hours later she came back with the new babies. Because their eyes were srtill closed and their bodies only three inches long, they resembled the "three blind mice." They were wrappped in warm, snug blankets and their foster mother took them home. Bottle feeding kittens, this young, is a daunting task and one which often ends with the little ones dying. But in this case, with love and devotion, the three orphans grew stronger each day.

They thrived on their special homemade formula and when they were seven weeks old, their foster mother brought them back to the shelter. With "happy tears" she watched as three adoptive families took them home.

Thanks to the teamwork of Best Friends workers and a dedicated foster care staff, kitens like the "three blind mice" managed to beat the odds and now have wonderful loving homes.
